Why a Plug-and-Play Board

A plug-and-play driver board is a complete IGBT driver that is matched to a specific module and mounts directly onto it. Because the gate resistors, protection thresholds and isolated supply are already designed and tested for that module, the user invests no time in driver development. This shortens the schedule and removes a major source of risk in a power-electronics project. This guide explains how to select a Power Integrations SCALE-2 plug-and-play board.

Step 1: Start From the IGBT Module

The first and most important step is to identify the exact IGBT module. A plug-and-play board is valid only for the module it was designed for, and using it with a different module can cause failure. The board's model number typically includes a code for the module, so start from your IGBT part number and find the matching board. Where the module is not listed, a driver IC with a custom layout may be the better path.

Voltage Class

Confirm the board's blocking voltage and interface against your DC link and safety requirement. SCALE-2 boards cover modules from 1200 V up to 3300 V and beyond; high-voltage boards use a fiber-optic interface to isolate the command signals.

Step 2: Choose the Interface

Boards are available with an electrical interface or a fiber-optic interface. An electrical interface is simple and cost-effective for lower-voltage systems, while a fiber-optic interface provides electrical insulation for the command and status signals and is the standard choice at high voltage, where it also resists the electromagnetic noise of the power stage. Some boards add a digital interface with telemetry, letting the system configure the driver and read its status over the optical link.

Channel Count and Master/Slave

Boards come in single-channel and dual-channel form. A single-channel board drives one IGBT, and a dual-channel board drives two, as in a half-bridge. For parallel-connected modules, master/slave operation lets one master board drive up to three slaves so the modules switch together safely, which is common in traction and high-power converters.

Step 3: Confirm Protection and Accessories

A SCALE-2 board includes an on-board DC/DC converter for the isolated gate supply, short-circuit protection with Vce monitoring, active clamping to limit turn-off overvoltage, supply monitoring and status feedback. Confirm these features match your requirement, especially the active clamping for high-voltage turn-off. Some models pair with an external isolated DC-DC converter or a specific cable assembly, so list the accessories before you order.

Step 4: Plan Mounting and Thermal Design

The board mounts onto the module with the specified hardware, so confirm the mechanical fit and the clearance for the isolation distances. Plan the thermal design for the module and the driver together, and route the fiber-optic or electrical interface away from the power stage. Validate the assembly on the bench at the real DC-link voltage before release.

Getting Help

If you send your IGBT module part number, DC-link voltage and interface preference to our FAE team, we will propose the matching board and list the accessories, then quote with current stock and lead time. BeiLuo holds mainstream SCALE-2 boards in regional stock and ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents, so you can adopt a plug-and-play driver without a supply gap.
