Overview
Traction and railway systems place the most demanding requirements on power electronics: high voltage, high current, wide temperature range, vibration and a service life measured in decades. The IGBT gate driver must drive high-voltage modules reliably, protect them through faults, and isolate the controller from the high-voltage power stage. Power Integrations SCALE-2 plug-and-play boards are built for exactly these conditions, and BeiLuo supplies them with genuine traceability and FAE support.
High-Voltage Module Drive
A traction converter switches high-voltage IGBT modules on a DC link that can exceed 1500 V, so the driver must handle a high blocking voltage and a large gate current. A SCALE-2 board such as the 1SP0635 drives modules from 1200 V to 3300 V with a peak gate current of 35 A, and it includes an on-board DC/DC converter, so the isolated gate supply is integrated. Because the board is matched to the module and mounts directly onto it, the gate resistors and protection thresholds are already correct, which removes a major source of design risk in a rail project.
Fiber-Optic Interface
At high voltage, an electrical interface is impractical, so the 1SP0635 uses a fiber-optic link for the command and status signals. The optical interface provides electrical insulation and immunity to the electromagnetic noise of a traction environment, and it allows the controller to be placed away from the power stage. The digital version, the 1SP0635V2A0D, adds telemetry so the system can monitor the driver in operation.
Active Clamping and Protection
When a large IGBT turns off a high current at a high DC-link voltage, the di/dt and the loop inductance produce an overvoltage that can exceed the device rating. Dynamic Advanced Active Clamping limits this overvoltage by feeding a controlled current back to the gate, keeping the device within its safe operating area. Combined with short-circuit protection, supply monitoring and under-voltage lockout, this makes the driver robust through the faults and transients of a traction system.
Scaling to Higher Power
Traction converters often parallel several IGBT modules to reach the required current. The 1SP0635 operates in a master/slave configuration, where a master drives a single module or up to three slaves drive up to four parallel modules. This lets the power stage scale without changing the driver topology, and it keeps the failure modes well understood, which matters for a safety-related application.
Selection and Supply
Selection starts with the IGBT module and the DC-link voltage, then narrows by gate current, interface and protection, choosing an analog board for a straightforward design or the digital version when monitoring is required. BeiLuo keeps mainstream SCALE-2 boards in regional stock, ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents, and supports module matching, interface and thermal design with an in-house FAE team. From a traction inverter to a railway auxiliary converter, our engineers help you choose the gate drive that keeps the system safe and reliable.
